You’ve decided to\u00a0add a Golden Retriever to your family.\u00a0 You want to\u00a0visit a breeder, but don’t know how to tell one breeder from another (the good from the bad!)\u00a0 So just how do you evaluate a good breeder?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Many people ask this same question the first time they visit a Golden Retriever breeder.\u00a0 It’s natural, as you may feel bewildered as to what types of intelligent\u2014and crucial\u2014questions.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

That’s why I’ve included these next several questions. You may not want \u2014 or need \u2014 to ask all of these questions, but then, again, you may.\u00a0Some can be dropped into a casual conversation and others might be more formally asked. \u00a0This list provides you with an initial point at which you can open a dialogue.\u00a0 Depending on the answers you receive, you’ll discover that you may have some follow-up questions of your own.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Let’s start off with some general questions about Golden Retrievers and breeding in general:<\/p>\n

1.\u00a0 How long have you owned Golden Retrievers?<\/p>\n

2.\u00a0 How long have you been breeding them?<\/p>\n

3.\u00a0 Why do you own them?\u00a0 Do you show them or are they kept as family pets?<\/p>\n

4.\u00a0 Personally, what do you see as their most important single characteristic?<\/p>\n

5. \u00a0In your years of handling these dogs, what health concerns seem to reappear?<\/p>\n

6.\u00a0 How would you describe the “ideal” Golden Retriever?<\/p>\n

The questions above make for wonderful, all around conversation.\u00a0 The following questions are more specific \u2014 they are designed to help you target your choice of puppies<\/a>:<\/p>\n

1.\u00a0 Do you have a written contract and a puppy guarantee?<\/p>\n
